Quinta da Abelheira is located at the foot of one of the green valleys that characterize the region surrounding Mafra.

Considered one of the most historically significant regions in Portugal, this area shows its long journey through time with memories of conquests and re-conquests, and stories of kings and queens, their promises and their passions.

Here, honouring a promise from the king to his queen that he would build a convent should she bear him a child, the Monastery of Mafra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was built.

In the Monastery you can visit the Palace, the Convent, the Basilica with one of the largest sets of bell carillons in the world, as well as the magnificent Library.

Surrounded by the famous Tapada de Mafra Gardens, a vast green area that reaches the Quinta da Abelheira area, the Monastery of Mafra is one of the most important monuments in Portugal.

A few kilometers from the Quinta is the coastal town of Ericeira, well known to surf lovers the world over. Ericeira's beaches became a World Surfing Reserve in 2011, being the 2nd Reserve to be classified globally, and the first one in Europe.
